All it costs to fulfill the average person's needs for digital services is a $5 per month VPS instance. It's even cheaper if you buy a single board computer and host your services at home.
We've been letting companies steal our personal data and sell it to the highest bidder and destroying democracy in the process all to save what? A coffee a month?

We take Lets Encrypt for granted these days, but imagine you host a $5 per month server just for your needs and had to buy a $100 SSL certificate for it. Wouldn't you be discouraged from self-hosting in the first place?

My raspberrypi arrived at 12:30, by 13:30 I had @yunohost up and running and the ports of my router set up!
The next step, installing some apps. Mysql was not running but a quick ask to the amazing community and in less than 30min I already had an answer. Now i have my own selfhosted cloud!!!
What an amazing soft and even better community.

Ended up with a snappy little git endpoint fenced in with git-shell and enough self-hosting capability to be happy without a repo web FE.

Following up on the #github fiasco, maybe on top of only using #FOSS software, and federating as much as possible along #selfhosting, what we really need is agent-centric naming and #identity system (also to allow for nomadic identity for #Mastodon and the fediverse).
