I do have some experience in this space, including prototyping a project very similar to yours @LeoSammallahti called Babelizer back in 2007. Of course I didn't know about platform co-ops at the time, and it definitely sounds like a good candidate for such an approach!
Who's working on transactions in the fediverse? I keep seeing ACTUAL signs of people preparing to leave platforms like Patreon and the company getting ready to shake off lots of people.
I' now view venture-funded vs. bootstrapped as just as important a distinction as proprietary vs FOSS.
VCs invest in companies that they think will either 1) fail or 2) as 10× as big. No one can grow 10× by organically growing their current user base with a good product—they have to change *something*. And those changes frequently harm/abuse current users.
So, I'm suspicious of #gitlab, #wire, and #keybase—#foss software can't make up for perverse growth incentives.

If so, fairly sure we're seeing Google responding to this "threat" to their tracking everyone - i.e. "these indexes are ours, we created them, and we alone will use them."
This illustatres well how a lot of users of the big centralised platforms think, or at least how a lot of journalists portray the situation, not even mentioning the valid alternatives a lot of the time.
